Default How to get a type of shot like these

I know it might be a broad question but I was wondering if anyone has advice as how to get the kind of shots like these

BeautifulEndings - Recent Happenings
&
Look Yourself by *HenryHorn on deviantART

Its the kind of rustic look I amd trying to achieve (especially evident in the second URL)

They both look as though they have a quite low exposure.

Any advice on how to get these would be much appreciated

looks like a lot of dodge and burning especially for the edges. maybe a multiply or overlay layer set to a low opacity?

just a guess

The first looks like lots of contrast and a black and white layer over the top set to a low opacity.

That Henry Horn guy is on here as well, I believe. You could send him a PM about his one, if he doesn't see this thread.

Done so. It was just that they don't look like the usual snap and I see this sort of shot time and time again. Especially with the BeautifulEndings - Recent Happenings link there were a number of pictures and also BeautifulEndings - Recent Happenings from the same photgrapher, where all the shots have that same softened rustic effect and I would be suprised if all the shots have post production. I might be wrong, but if they were natural I was intregued as to how a photographer can get a camera to do that.

Thanks for your input. I'll start playing with some photos to try to see what I can get.
