Default Mac vs. PC

I have posted my initial thoughts on my new iMac on my blog. I just wanted to express my satisfaction and get the opinion of others. Comment and critiques are encouraged!

I know my wife would choose a mac over a PC anyday for her Gfx work.

I can't have one though as I spent up on lenses

I got an iMac about a year ago. I don't see myself ever going back to a PC. I have none of the problems I used to have with my previous PC's. No system crashes, software problems, etc.

People will probably shout at me lol but the only difference I see between Mac and PC is shortcut keys and menu structers.

Most the programs are multi platform and run on both. I have had no real issues with PC's as long as you keep the software upto date and install your hardware drivers. Most problems I find come with networking and the problems that effect PC crashes usualy come from... lets not go there hehe. But with Windows 7 I believe alot of the networking side has been cleaned up and resources used by the system lowered and just optimised better.

As long as we comparing against similar spec machines there both pretty similar.

For the record I am a life long mac user.

However, the bottom line is... Mac vs PC, Canon vs. Nikon, Coke vs. Pepsi.... it all comes down to personal preference.

^ I agree.

I'm also a mac user – always have been, always will be. I would say that mac is a step up when it comes to their packaging and the "opening the box" experience.

Since almost all programs these days exist on both platforms I have no clue why anyone would buy a MAC -- you just end up spending more money for the same hardware, or get lesser hardware for the same price.

Sometimes, it's not about the hardware, it's about the software and the OS. I learned to code on BSD Unix back in the mid-80s. To me, Darwin's command line is something you're going to have to pry from my cold dead fingers if the other alternative is DOS.

To me, the difference between having a full-blown UNIX operating system vs. DOS is much akin to the difference between having a full-loaded SLR system with all the toys, and a broken phonecam that only works half the time. Yes you can do things with batch files, but most of the time, when you've been used to the real power tools, you really don't want to.

I mean, hell, I put cygwin on my Windows boxes because I'm so in need of a UNIX command line and UNIX tools at all times. And I. hate. cygwin.

And yes, I could use a Linux box, but then Lightroom and Photoshop are non-starters. I get the best of both worlds with a Mac: roll your own compile-from-the-source tinkerability, and ease of polished commercial software.

There's a beauty to OSX that cannot be explained to a non-programmer. The fact that OSX is portable and scalable and can be simply hopped from Motorola PowerPC to Intel, or squeezed down to run on an ARM in an iPhone, or up on over 2000 cores to create a supercomputer is something I find unbelievably wonderful. I'm sure you think I'm mad, but when I see OSX that way, equating Windows to OSX is a joke.

I use PC instead of a MAC and still remember using a PDP 11 to rewrite UNIX while working on my Computing Science degree major in Operating System.

This would be similar to a Canon vs. Nikon debate, but it's quite a bit different. It'd be like Nikon and Canons having the exact same hardware (same LCD, sensor, buttons, etc.) with a different body style. The camera menu system would be different, and there'd be a lot less accessories for the Nikon. And accessories (lenses, memory cards, etc.) you did buy for the Nikon would be 2-3 times the cost for the same thing on the Canon.

And the Nikon would cost 3 times as much.

But people would continue to swear by Nikon and buy Nikon despite these reasons because...well, I have yet to figure that out.
