There are many ways to organize, which ever the one that's best suited to your workflow. I put mine in folders, Subject and then assign a number to the order I took them. 001 for 01/01/10, 002 for the next assignment and so forth. These folders are burn to a DVD and the Subject, date and DVD number as logged into a master book for the year 2010. It was the way I was taught, but there are many different ways of organizing your photos. However, I do keep a master portfolio on my desktop and add my very best photo. I also keep my assignment selects (Mariners vs. Tigers, 04/12/10 and so forth) stored in monthly folders: Jan-December 2010, for the month they were shot. That way at the end of the year, I end up burning DVD's of the very best pictures I took for 2010. I hope this helps.
But you could have folders for Nature, Landscapes, People, Sports, Animals and whatever subject matter you prefer.

Subject and date. For example; "Virginia Bluebells 4/22/10" and "Morel Mushrooms 4/29/10". I don't bother much with filenames, only images I sell (as greeting cards and framed prints) get special names, to be more appealing to the customer than "DSC 00157". As for edits, I keep them side-by-side with the original for easy reference. Hope this helps!
