Default a parrot photo you dont want to take..

DSC_4658.JPG

I lost my parrot the other day... she was missing since 3pm to 7am the next day.
After ages of looking for her, i heard her calling back to me when i was walking around and found her on a roof...

The problem was that she couldnt seem to fly down the way (updraft/wind currents) she tried and tried to get back to me but it took her till 11:30am and many attempts of circling the area and landing on diff places before she managed to land on my arm.

This photo is a heavy crop from a 60foot or so tree that she spend about 1 hour on just preening herself and picking of leaf's and watching them fall to the ground... she seemed happy that i was there watching her, a few other birds tried it on but she didnt seem to pay them any attention.

Im so lucky to have her back... just thought id share

Why not clip her wings so that doesn't happen again? Its easy and doesnt hurt them and might just save her life!
Beautiful African Grey and am so glad you got her back.
I had a red lore Amazon for 27 years. My Angel sadly passed away in August and is missed very much. I hope you have just as much time with your friend!

i'm so very glad you got your grey back.....like wind, i have my rita, the sexiest cockatoo to ever walk a perch....i'd be lost without her.....

now that you have her back, it would be a great time to take her to see the vet.....wild birds carry a wealth of viruses that your girl has no natural defenses against....get her checked out and get the vet to show you how properly clip and maintain your bird's wings....

i know this was a horrible experience for you and that you'll be more careful in the future.....even with clipped wings, there is always the possibility of her catching an updraft.....or worse....getting snagged by a hawk.....you were very lucky to get her back....

ohh it was my own fault.. at my old house, i used to sit with her in the garden just on my shoulder and she was fine. She is a great little flyer (indoors) but outdoors she didnt know how to manage with the wind and updrafts.

Anyway i took her outside again in my new place, seemed sunny and no wind. But she got a fright i think (or tried to fly to my partner.. again something new for her used to just be me). And the wind kicked up just as she did so,, wooshing her right up in the air.

The first thing she did was circle around and fly for me but she couldn't figure out how to come back down and i lost sight of her behind a building. I ran to find her only to see nothing.. it was heart wrenching.. i thought i lost her and as the day went on the more i thought id never see her again.

When i did find her the next morning, she was calling back to me and i located her on a roof 5 mins from my house. She was probably sitting there just waiting for me to find her, she was so happy to see me again and all she did was try get back to me.

You would never thing that she spent a night in the city looking at her now.. and she is as happy as me to be back by the looks of things

*edit* wont be doing that again.... ill stick to her travel cage from now on.

It's a good thing it was an African Grey and not a Norwegian Blue. My understanding is that if you don't nail a Norwegian Blue down to the perch, it will nuzzle up to those bars, bend 'em apart with its beak, and VOOM! Feeweeweewee!

They're remarkable birds, Norwegian Blues. Lovely plumage, when they aren't pining for the fjords.

i actually have a harness for her (full body one, has an elasticated cord) but she doesn't like it, i tried one on her when she was younger and on her first outing she got a fright and associated the harness with that.
