I agree - pack everything, and just take what you need each day. Something wide for Rome, especially if you visit St Peter's.. On thing to remember - the coach from the port at Civitavecchia to Rome is fairly long trip, which eats into the day, and if that's at the end of your cruise you might not have much sightseeing time in Rome before your flight (which would be a terrible shame) unless you plan to stay there for a couple of days before you fly home (which is a much better idea
)Just out of interest, who are you going with? I did Venice to Barcelona (via Greece and Turkey) a couple of years ago, with Princess, and had an absolutely fantastic time. Russ.

Doing a repositioning cruise from Florida to Rome with princess on the "crown princess". We are planning on staying in Rome for a bit before flying back.
I have the 35mm 1.8 DX for my wide/fast glass. 2 8 gig and 1 16 gig cards I think I will pick another 2 8 gig up i think ![]() I have heard horror stories about pick pockets in Rome any experience? I am not worried about the passports etc. More so the camera gear. I just hope we can fly back with all that ash in the air.

There are pickpockets everywhere.
However, I did have my only pickpocket experience on a crowded train in Rome. A rather good looking well-dressed young man tried to reach into my bag. He was very quiet and slick and I would not have noticed except for the grandmotherly Italian woman who caught him in the act. She yelled at him in Italian and he slinked off. I was grateful, the Japanese lady standing next to me was shocked and the Italian lady was angry. None of us spoke the same language, but it was one of the most interesting "conversations" I've had as we gestured and smiled at one another. BTW, he would have only stolen some tissues, a water bottle, a guidebook and some lip gloss. Anything of value was hidden away and my husband had the camera. |

Fast: yes. Wide: no.
By "wide" most people mean 10mm to 20mm on DX

Fisheyes are actually cheap (Nikon: ~$750). The 18mm end of your 18-105 is plenty!

Thought I would share an interesting website that can give you some great tips to protecting your camera gear from theft by pickpockets and street thieves. This website has many pages that outline specific locations in Spain and Italy that have heavy pickpocket and theft problems. When you go to the page, scroll down to the pickpocket section. It outlines the scams that are going on at these locations so you know about them before they find you. The website also has a camera security section that might be of interest.
Whats also interesting about this website is that is has several videos of pickpockets in action in many of these same cities - Like Barcelona and the Trevi Fountain in Rome. These videos really give you good look on how skilled these thieves are. Camera gear is very expensive - and loosing it to a skilled thief is not an option you want to deal with - especially when traveling overseas. Take a few mins and read the most common scams, watch a few videos, and you add the extra insurance that you will have a great trip with photo memories that will last a lifetime. Hope this helps - have a great trip! Last edited by David99; 04-20-2010 at 04:46 AM. |

You definitely don't need to worry about your passport - you generally hand that in when you get on the ship and they hold them centrally, so that the port authorities can check them randomly and easily if they want to. The little cruise card that they give you works as a passport, to get you on and off the ship, as well as for buying drinks and stuff in the shops. They do an awesome tour on the Crown too (I think they might be rolling it out to the rest of the fleet) where you get to see all the behind-the-scenes stuff - backstage in the theatre and all the lighting and scenery stuff that they have (which is amazing), the engine control room, and all that kind of thing. I think they even give you one of the jackets that the chefs wear to take away. ![]() As far as pickpockets are concerned - just follow the same precautions that you'd follow going to any big, crowded, tourist-crammed location. Just take the things you need to take with you for the day. Have one credit card between you, and enough cash, and leave the rest locked in the safe in your cabin (or in your hotel, once you're in Rome). Russ.
