Default Have you changed your focusing screen?

I changed the default focusing screen in my 40D for the EF-D Precision Matte with Grid.

This was fairly easy to do by following the instructions & using the little tool provided.

I particularly like the grid for lining up verticals & horizontals- the Precision Matte does help when you switch to manual focus.

I am aware that this facility is not available on all cameras.

I've replaced mine. The first time I tried I wasn't as careful as I should have been and ended up scratching it. Fortunately it only cost me $20 for the replacement.

My Fuji S1000fd has a built in grid that you can turn on or off, it's very useful for composition - rule of thirds and horizons etc....If that's the kind of thing you were referring to...

I changed the screen on my D40 for a split prism, it was really hard to us a MF lens with the original screen. Not a big deal but I got some dust in there the first time and had to take it out, clean it, and retry.

A focusing screen is a flat translucent material, usually ground glass (can be plastic), found in a SLR camera that allows the user of the camera to preview the framed image in a viewfinder. Often, a focusing screen has etched markings that differ from model to model.

I replaced my D3 standard screen with a Type E screen (etched with a grid).
