I've looked through a ton of this on flickr, I've been thinking about getting a couple of cheap P/S cameras to try it out.

Kite no. Helium mini-blimp yes.

There are a couple of real estate photogs using tethered blimps to shoot aerials - at least with a blimp you're more likely to achieve a controlled landing

Agreed. I've always been really bad at getting kites to fly well. OR land without slamming to the ground so hard they break.
