Default Developing a crippling case of Lensitis, a.k.a 'Lens Lust'

I was warned over Christmas when I received my first DSLR, to avoid catching the dreaded 'Lens Lust'. I figured with the 18-55mm, 50mm f1.8, and 55-250mm I would be happy for quite some time. Then, I saw the praises of the 85mm f1.8 for low light action (karate) and portraits - so I HAD to buy that. Now, my flower garden will be soon sprouting in the next month and I'll NEED a macro (100mm f2.8, I believe). There is also an itch starting for L lenses, which terrifies me a little too....

I am fortunate enough to make a decent living and live in a smaller community with a low cost of living - so financial ruin is unlikely....and it is strictly a hobby.

I know that you do not need a multitude of lenses for great photography...I just really want them! LOL!

Does the lust wear off after a while? Or am I going to end up on A&E's 'Intervention' with my family trying to get to lay off the lenses?

It never, ever, EVER wears off. I only have three but my B&H wishlist is enormous.

Remember the axiom: "He who dies with the most toys, wins!"

Now get out there and be a winner.

Love it! I am pretty sure that my husband just shuddered and doesn't quite know why!

Interesting topic. I got my GF1 in December and after 4 months I own 3 m4/3 digital lenses, several manual lenses, 2 mirror lenses, 2 adapters, a reversing ring, filters etc... and I chose this format to avoid bulk and weight LOL

My lens lust is wearing out now. There are lots of lens I want but only a few I need. I got most everything I need now. There are still a few L series lens I would love to have but I know it's just a pipe dream for now so I don't let it get to me.

I'm starting to get lighting accessory list now. I'm more interested in strobes and light modifiers then lens now.

No.

I don't need them, but a little lust is fine.

Susan I have the same dilemma as Sonya and I read your reply. Then I went and checked out your pictures and was very impressed. All these shots were from your lens's that yopu said you only have?? So I don't need those entire expensive lens just learn more on taking pictures?

It wore off. I wouldn't mind a lens that could go ultrawide but 10mm isn't that much more than 18mm and I haven't spent enough time at that limit to justify another purchase to myself. I also wouldn't mind a higher quality long telephoto to upgrade my 70-300mm (or a lens that would reach even further) but I rarely feel limited by not being able to zoom further so I'm content there as well.

Best of all, my current collection is still small and light enough that I can easily carry most or all of it round and have that range of choice available at all times.

Wow, thanks! Yup, all of my photos were done with the lenses I have. My 50mm 1.8 is on my camera 95% of the time.
