Default Maybe already answered but I cannot find it- Metadata question

Hello all, I have a question regarding metadata and settings on images. For instance, I was at SI.com this morning, (after coming here of course), and there was a photo of a nascar vehicle that was caught mid flip with its nose touching the track but obviously spinning and in a bad situation- I wanted to see what the settings on the camera were- I think its a big part of learning and I wanted to see the ISO, aperture, shutter speed etc. I have started really wanting to see this data as a way to sort of see how different photographers handle different situations and such. I know that there are certain sites like Flikr and others that allow you to see that information. Is that something that would be readily available or is it hidden for a specific reason by SI. Are there web-plugins that could reveal it.

sorry for the rambling

thanks in advance for your comments

It will only be available of it was originally uploaded as part of the picture.

Can you post a link to the picture?

Most websites will strip this information from an image before uploading to minimize the file size. If it's still intact, then you can use different browser plugins to view the details for an image without having to leave the browser window.

NASCAR news, results, drivers, schedules - Racing - SI.com

its currently up as the nascar page, has been taken off of the front of SI.com- not that I am a big nascar fan, but thought wow, what were the settings to get a shot like that.

thanks for your response

Using a browser EXIF viewer, there is no meta data on that photo you linked to.

So, if that is the case, other than sites such as this one, and Flikr et al, those who are trying to learn from the image, not just view it are out of luck then, would that be a true statement.

thanks for your help

You could try to contact either SI or Ap and find out the photographer that took it ans ask him or her?

Just looking at the picture says a lot.
(1) shooting conditions appear to be in bright sunlight.
(2) Both cars appear to be relatively sharp and in focus.
Applying the sunny 16 rule:

That would suggest to me a shutter speed of around 1/400 @ F16 @ ISO 400

or 1/800 @ F11 again for ISO 400

just extrapolate it up or down for different ISO

Here is a similar one of mine in what appears to similar shooting conditions (taken near midday and shooting towards the sun), except I was lower down to the track.
#12 Steve Pizzati

Camera: Canon EOS 40D + Canon 100-400 F4.5-F5.6 IS L lens
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture: f/11.0
Focal Length: 400 mm
ISO Speed: 200

Camera focus was AI servo (focus tracking) with centre focus point only. It is part of an unpublished sequence. I probably would have been on a mono pod and image stabilisation would have been off.
A 1402x900 pixel pic can be seen on my flicker page.

Joe Sebo was the photographer who captured the Atlanta shots.

so, remember how I mentioned that I was a noob in my original post, since the main subject of my photos are my sons, ages 6 and 4, and while I really enjoy sports, (played minor league baseball for the Cubs 20 years ago) I haven't yet gotten out and experimented with that type of shots- so in my ignorance, what is the sunny 16 rule, and is there a place where these "rules" are compiled. I say that not trying to be sarcastic, I have my Nikon D5000 and am always looking to try and tweak the settings, but that is a mixed bag of results. By the time they get to the age where they are coordinated enough to be in more organized activities, I would like to have the "rules" known enough to "capture the moment" as Kodak used to say.

thanks for your comments
