Default Got some bad news

Was away for the weekend, and when I got home there was a message from my Dad. So I called him back, and he told me that one of his sisters has passed away, and that my Mom has Alzheimer's. I knew she was losing it at Christmas. My Dad has asked that we visit a little more often than we have been, and I told him that I can make time to visit my Mom.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I've gone through the hell that is Alzheimer's twice now and wouldn't wish it on anyone. When my dad passed away my grandmother was already lost in her own mind and I ended up taking my dad's place. I can say that I did learn a lot about my dad during our visits when she'd reminisce with me about him. She'd talk about how scared she was when he was in Vietnam and how she hoped his son never went to war some day's we'd be back on their farm. You can guess the rest. Enjoy her lucid moments and always have a video camera near if you can. You will figure out why I promise. I can't take credit for that piece of advice though it came from one of my professors many moons ago when we were dealing with memory.

Sorry to hear that one dude - my Nan had dementia before she died a couple of years ago, so I know how upsetting it can be.

Spookily, I spent yesterday out in the freezing cold covering the Bath Half-Marathon on behalf of the Alzheimer's Society (a UK charity) who had a team of over 100 runners taking part to raise money. I must find out how much they raised - most of the runners that I got to speak to beforehand had raised between £500 and £1000 each, so if they'd all managed that kind of level, then they put together a pretty substantial sum.
