If you're using a PC then I recommend defragging the hard drive (I use defraggler for this)... also lightroom can use a lot of memory so maybe check in task manager how much memory and CPU time it's using (if it's running out of sytem memory it'll start using the hard drive as virtual memory, and that's really slow). I know that it keeps a database behind the scenes of exif information/keywords etc, so if you've just imported a huge batch of pictures then it may be updating that. Again, the hard drive light activity and task manager will show you if it's using up a lot of processing power at the time. If it is, I'd give it a few minutes to finish doing its database update, and then I'd start deleting the duff pics.

Are you deleteing them one at a time?
What you can do, is as you view them, hit the x key to mark any you don't want as rejected. Then after you have reviewed them all. From one of the menus, I think it's the photo menu, but it might be one of the others as I'm not on my laptop atm, is select "delete all rejected photos", you can then delelte them from lightroom, with the option to also delelte them from your hard drive.
