Default Uploaded images loose exposure and vibrance

I have been uploaded photos to flickr and posting them here for critique....

I keep getting feedback that they are under exposed and dull.... I kept increasing the brightness/exposure and working with them. When I had these pictures printed at a photo kiosk, they are blown out now in the face and other highlights... extremely over exposed.

I just uploaded another photo, and realized it does not look anything like the original on the computer. What gives with this? If I look at the picture on flickr, I would give the feedback that it is under exposed and lacks vibrance myself, but the picture on the computer is alive and appears properly exposed.

Has anyone else noticed that you loose at least one f-stop uploading, or am I on crack?

To give you an example, here is a picture that is over exposed when looked at in print format.

Have you checked to make sure your photos are in sRGB before uploading?

The photo you posted is in Adobe RGB instead of sRGB, which is a good way to get wildly variying results on the web.

Another issue may be monitor calibration.

As I've said before, even in sRGB, you may still run into issues when posting images to the internet. Flickr doesn't compress the images, but some sites do, and that will kill your images.

The bigger issue is browsers, though. Each one renders images differently, even in sRGB (though it does mitigate that). Open the same image in Internet Explorer, FIrefox and Safari: they'll all be different.

OK, took me about a hour to figure out where to change it in PS, but it does make a world of difference.

Both these pictures have the same edits as far as light, exposure, contrast etc go...

This one is sRGB

And this is what I was talking about before:

Thanks guys, this will help tons in getting my images critiqued and for sharing.

I went through the same thing over the summer with Elements 6. Was reading several books and was trying different things and changed a few settings in Preferences. Did my PP and uploaded to Flickr and couldn't figure out why the pictures looked so dull. I was reading an article about something else but it mentioned "color space" and it was like a big lightbulb went off in my head. I was working in aRGB but wasn't converting to sRGB before I uploaded...duh...

There is just so many things to learn and remember in this hobby called "Digital Photography" that it's not always easy to figure out what is happening when something looks wrong.

So, should my camera be set at sRGB? I usually shoot with Adobe RGB because it has more colors...

You should shoot in the widest color space you have and then convert later.
