Default Questions about framing and matting your photos

I want to start printing and displaying (beyond the web) more of my photos. I'm wondering what you do regarding framing your work. Some questions I have:

Do you frame them yourself or do you have them professionally done?

It seems like a black metal frame and a white mat is the standard display for photos. Do you follow this convention or do you work more with colored mats, frames, etc.

Do you stick with traditional (like 8x10) frame sizes and crop your photos to suit the frame or do you seek out sizes like 8x12 so the frame will suit the ratio of your photo?

I generally do "gallery wrap" canvas prints (Giclee) for stuff I'm displaying....
Some contests don't allow it, but I rather like them...

Depends on where the print is going. The frame has to fit the decor, and should fit with other frames in the room in both style, colour and matting options. It can also depend on the image youre putting into it too.

Default matting & framing

If you are doing matting and framing of your prints for your own enjoyment, i.e in your home, then how you do it is just a matter of personal taste, decor, etc. There are many options out there and the cost can vary. If you want to do it yourself, you can order framing kits that include the matting, backboard, frame, etc. or you can order each of these items individually. In addition to standard pre-cut sizes, custom-size cut matting is available so you can determine ratio of your photo to framing. If you do it yourself, just make sure it looks professional
If you have a print that you really enjoy and want to hang it on the wall as art, than take sk66's suggestion and have it done on canvas. It is worth the extra $$, and you will enjoy it for years to come!
Check out the websites for more info, and good luck

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into doing the canvas wraps. In the meantime I've got some prints on metallic paper that I'm trying to decide on framing for.
