But we're a pretty special group here on dPS - well, you lot are, I'm a grumpy old overworked community manager - I would say that if you wanted to take that first step n a totally no-pressure environment and see what became of it, that this is your ideal opportunity. Nobody is going to laugh and 2nd place isn't a loser like some other places will have you believe - neither would 1000th place be if we had one. Get involved, learn, that's why you're here right!! I've been thinking about this a lot. I'd probably try to get a macro lens, and a wide angle lens. I've no idea what that is in money terms. Maybe a polarised filter. Small ambitions but would open things up for me a bit I guess.

I don't know really what the difference between an entry level camera 1000D or a higher entry level camera is.

$1600 should cover a used 5D and 70-200 f/4L.
