A thread over in "How I Took It" Painful photographs had me wondering if any one has managed to hurt themselves while taking a picture.
A few months ago I was out trying to take some shots of a train. I was climbing a flight of steel steps up to the tracks when I heard the train approaching. Gracefully ( ) and quickly turning to face the train, I tripped over the top step and fell on the grating at the top. As I went flying, my first thought was to save my camera, the photographer can be repaired cheaper . Luckily, only a scratched filter that I had just purchased for my lens the day before (why I always put filters on my lenses now). However my knees were black and blue and my hand skinned. Plus my embarrassment at what happened since of course there were witnesses to my klutziness. This is the shot I quickly snapped before hobbling back down the stairs: ![]() Not even that good for all I went through.

This happened to me about twenty years ago Saralonde. I didn't get hurt jut got a bad cold. As I am a fly fisherman and love fishing Atlantic Salmon I spend a lot of time standing waist deep in streams wearing chest waders. I never went fishing without having my Contax 35mm SLR tucked inside the waders and spent as much time taking pictures as I did fishing. I was taking some shots of a moose drinking at stream side and I slipped. Down I went of course I had to protect the camera and my flyrod so I ended up on my rear both arms up and my waders filling with water. Try standing up when you are wearing chest waders filled with water. Pulled out the line on the rod put it around my arm,(kept the rod safe) then shot ten frames or so of the moose. Sat there in the middle of the stream for an hour or so till my fishing partner came back to meet for shore lunch. Really didn't want to move for fear of being washed down stream.

6 miles deep within a swamp with my gear, my two sons, and on a hot day.
Spent the day doing some strenous hiking, shooting in a bunch of weird, wet, dry, dense areas of the swamp, lifting up huge rotted logs to find certain subjects, ... and all went like a charm that day. It was a "he-man" kind of day! At the very end of the day, and again, still 6 miles deep in the swamp, I stooped to tie up my boots. Simple and easy to do, ... right? When I stood up, ... well, ... it was like the wrath of god hit me. Severe groin pull! That was the longest, toughest 6 miles of my life. My dear sons suddenly became my pack mules!

Well, ... I just noticed that you asked "while you were trying to get a shot".
Oh well!

Hurt, no. Wet muddy and very itchy, yes. For this shot:
![]() I had taken several shots from the same vantage point--a wooden float about 3 feet out from the bank in this wetland. At this time of year the water there isn't but about 1 1/2 to 2 feet deep. I crouched down to get behind the grass, and took this shot. Then promptly lost my balance and fell backwards. I landed on the very edge of the float and went backwards into the water. Camera high in the air, of course, not a drop on it thank goodness. So I get up, with mud and ick and dirty water covering the back half of me from head to toe (literally) and called it a night. I had to walk back to my truck, about 1/2 a mile. The mosquitoes really loved me and I got about 50 bites. AND, I didn't have a towel or sheet so I had to get my truck seat filthy and wet for the 10 mile drive home. I sure wish the photo was better for all that trouble! I've also gotten poison ivy more than once while taking photos. But I'm really susceptible to it anyway...
