Default what is meant by the term 'study'

I often hear of photos being called a portrait study or a black and white study. What makes a photograph a study?

A 'study,' I believe, would be a series of photographs that make up that 'study.' For example, if I wanted to do a Macro study, I would go out and shoot a series of different macro shots to make up a series of shots, which could then be called a study in macro. Another analogy I could draw would be an 'exercise,' as in an 'exercise in futility.'

One photograph may make a study. A series of pics using the same theme or practices, makes up a study.

...another interpretation might be that a study is a preliminary piece of work, to be used for later elaboration, or a practice, if you will...almost like writing a novel, where you have first, second, and third drafts, etc, before it goes to print.

...at least this is MY interpretation.

I call it a study when I'm trying to find a flavor I'm going for. So i shoot the same thing 1,000,000 ways and pick 5 or 10 that I like and offer them up as my "research" into the object/subject.

One common feature of a "study" is that you're looking at a single object, subject, or setting. You are studying that object from different angles, in different ways, with different compositions, to learn more (and show more) about it through photography.

For example, I recently did a "study" of a standard desktop computer, through a series of four photos of different parts -- mostly abstract, focusing on lines and shapes. It was a good exercise.

How many people does it take to google "study"? Two. One to do it and the second to correct the link.

Any fool can google "study". But perhaps the OP was more interested in specific examples of how it applies to photography and some community interaction on DPS.
