That's life I'm afraid. When it was announced by a Hearst Corporation official during an all staff meeting on January 15th 2009 that the Seattle Post-intelligencer last day of publication was to be March 18, 2009, you could have heard a pin drop on the carpet.

Times are certainly tough right now. Just remember the old saying, what doesnt kill you will only make you stronger. A lot of truth in that

I feel your pain. I've been on both sides. The tech industry got hit quite hard in this area early 2000s. I went through three layoffs in a two year period. It was better to be one of the first out the door I concluded. I also learned to slip out a little early on Friday and make them wait until Monday to pull me aside and give me the news. :-)
The positive that came from the periods of uncertainty is that as I realized I was running out of UE benefits with no good news in sight, I started my own consulting/repair business targeting a market the bigger companies avoided (home users and very small businesses). Funny thing is I intended to do it only as long as needed and then find a job when the economy recovered. Seven years later I am still self-employed and very busy and I'm very very fortunate to have stayed busy and prosperous through these recent tough times. My heart goes out to all who are going through a difficult time right now. Hang in there, be creative and look for the opportunities. You never know what life has in store for you.
