Doing my first newborn shot....

Ok, so a friend of mine had a baby just over a week ago & she has asked me if I could take some photos for her. She knows I'm still learning, but she still wants me to do it.

I have quite a few ideas for shots etc... but it's more the settings I'm unsure of. I'll hopefully have my new camera by then - canon 1000D twin lens kit, otherwise I'll be using my mum's 400D. I'll really only have one big window that lets in a huge amount of natural light to use (& I guess can turn the light in the room on as well if we need it). What settings (roughly) should I have the camera on? Lately I've been using the camera on Appeture Priority and have had the focal length on 18mm, so I can keep it down to f/3.5. The ISO has usually been on 800, but I'd prefer to keep it on 400 if there's enough light to start with..... I don't use the flash if I can avoid it & no - I don't have an external flash

Any advice would be really helpful!!!!!
