Default If you could tell a pro one thing....

Ok nice thread on the adivce to newbies..

Now how about all the new people turn the table...

If you could tell a pro one thing about photography what would it be?

I'll start..

Don't be a photo snob. The world will not end If I become good at it too. You will still be good.

Good point. I've seen a lot of pros who have been around a while...they seem to be offended that photography has been opened to the masses the way it has. Almost like how snowboarders took over the ski slopes, and added the skateboarder mentality to a previously elitist niche.

My advice to Pros: If you're half as good as you think you are, then you shouldn't be threatened by Joe McAmateur!!

There you go....talking about me again My advice to other pros........teach and educate those masses. Education is the best weapon out there. Sooner or later they'll figure out that it's better to take pictures for fun and not for business.

Funny guy, Jim. Actually, I've seen your work, and have a great deal of respect for you. I think that's evident by the past PMs I've had with you. I don't think you fall into that category to which I've referred. However, I don't think what I've described is much of a stretch. While we can all can take great photographs, only a few will become great photographers. Education is the key. All that time I spent in college, the only thing I REALLY learned is how much I DON'T know. Photography is no exception.

Education................is the key. Gotta keep evolving or will be left behind. I have a photographer friend of mine, I've know 30 years. Tremendous eye, skilled, but as soon as we switched to digital he stopped shooting and now just fishes for salmon and other game fish. Why......didn't he keep up with the techie end? He was afraid of computers. Now, isn't that a rip? Such talent going to waste.

I was the same...when I first opened up the digital camera manuel in 1991 and realized I would be starting all over again and didn't understand this digital crap at all. It took hours of researching, reading, shooting and developing a digital workflow that helped me along (along with a bottle of Mt. Gay Rum. For all you rum drinkers out there..this brand of rum is from Barbados and is the nectar of the gods..try it.) But as soon as i realized just how many advantages digital held over film, I never looked back.

The same thing I said in the last thread, which was:

Insulting other photographers won't make you any better.

And for what it's worth I'd like to remind everyone that being a parent and/or part of a family in any respect doesn't make one incapable of using a camera. Like, it's not that hard. So much hate for the "Uncle Bob" and "mom with point and shoot." Where does this bizarro terminology come from? It comes off so petty and rude. Like how every time I read the DWF Blog I just feel kind of dirty because they are so smarmy and better-than-thou. Ugh. In the so-called cult of personality a lot of "professional" photographers are on the losing side, imo.

When we walk past each other, me with my kit gear and you with your awesome "I can take a shot of a grain of rice in darkness and make it look like artwork" gear, and I say hi and smile; don't look down your nose at me. We clearly enjoy doing the same thing and I'm happy to see someone else enjoying it. Just smile and say hi back.

EDIT: I guess that wasn't directly about photography. Oh well, I beg your forgiveness and all of that kind of stuff.

"Your days of selling prints are over. Be prepared to give up the high-res digitals."

It's the way the market is going. If you build it in to your pricing structure now, you can get ahead of your competition.
