Default Places to go in the UK

Figured we've had a few where to shoot's for various other parts of the world and, unless im being blind, there isn't one for the UK.

So where would you say are the 'must go to' places in the UK, why and when is the best time of year to go there?

Depends what you want to take photographs of... .every city has great architecture, some more historical than others.. there are rolling green hills, woodland, rivers and waterfalls everywhere.. plenty of beaches, lakes, mountains... just about the only thing we don't have is deserts!

London in the summertime (but definitely not in winter unless you love grey/white skies ) There's just so many photo ops even away from the tourist traps. And the gherkin is awesome even if it has been photographed about a billion times!

I've never taken my camera out there but Derbyshire/Peak District has some beautiful countryside and is great for a nice walk even without your camera. Also the top spot in the country (I believe) for rock climbing, which can make for some cool images.

Of course, the Lake District is beautiful.

And as Danny said, great architecture in pretty much every city. York Minster, Salisbury Cathedral, oh and the Clifton Suspension Bridge is awesome.

Definately the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset.

I did a whistle stop tour last year:

Old Harry Rocks
Durdle Door
Kimmeridge
Tyneham Village
Corfe Castle

The only problem was Durdle Door. I wanted to take a photo at sunset (I've seen pro photos in mags and they look awesome and wanted to try to recreate a shot) so I figured in November it would have been around 4.30 - 5pm but when I got there there were signs up in the car park saying "Gates locked at 4pm". I had my daughter with me so we rushed down to take some photos which by this time was 3.30 and rushed back to the car for 3.55 only to be stopped by the warden who said "Your late!!" and I said "Not by my watch I'm not". No-one speaks to me in that tone and gets away with it and so he says "Listen lady I'm not going to get into the pedantics of what each others watches says. I open and close the gates by my watch and your 5 miniutes over!!".

Flippin heck what would he do if I was 30 minutes late. Detain me overnight or what??

Let that be a warning not to be late at Durdle Door!

As it happened I didn't get a sunset just a red face!!

Only a visitor these days ,but check the National Trust handbook for a house and garden near you. For example Sissinghurst. Lots of great photo ops. Just my 2 penny worth!

One of the riches of the UK is a very diverse blend of architecture and history. If you like buildings made of stone, where there is interest both in the texture and pattern of the material as well as in numerous intricate details of the designs, then many towns and cities will hold ample sites of interest.

I'm a bit biased as a relatively new resident of Oxford but you could also compare and contrast that with, for example, Cambridge, Canterbury, Bath, York, Lincoln and more.

As for when to visit them, early in the morning is a good time, before the streets get too busy, especially when you have lighting conditions like clear skies and a recently risen sun or perhaps thick mist from which the buildings loom.

I loved the architecture in Edinburgh. I don't really know other UK cities though so I can' really comment on them. I really did find Edinburgh to be a wonderful city in architecture and I have wanted to go back there even before I was interested in photography.

Studied for just under 1 year there and I loved wandering around looking at the buildings.

Chester Zoo i think is one of the best Zoo's in the UK
