I don't think it's so much about intent or whether or not money is gained but a way of life. I barely think of myself as a "photographer" but I didn't even consider calling myself that until I started noticing that I see the world differently now then I did before I was looking through a camera on a regular basis. Even without a camera I find myself composing shots and looking at things the way my camera sees them.
It's not so much a job description but a life description. If taking pictures is what defines your life, whether it's your job or your hobby, you're a photographer.

Interesting point - yer - i see life different now to - it defines the way i see things. I'd never considered you in terms of how it changes your perspective. I suppose its a bit like an athlete learns to see exercise and food differently. Hmmmm

Your point and the way you communicated it is beautiful...the part about seeing the world differently is true for me as well.
