Yes, there are flashes in development that generate light that isn't visible to the human eye but can still illuminate your subject just like a speedlight. This would rock at places where flashes aren't allowed, but would totally help, like dark rooms, weddings, etc.
For example, if your camera has live view, point your TV remote control at the lens and press a button. Your camera can see the light coming from your remote, but the human eye can't.

I do this all the time with Infrared (IR) Diodes. The human eye can't see IR, but it is in the spectral range of your camera.
Try it out sometime: Hold the end of a remote control up to your camera and press a button on the remote...you should see the IR diode light up on the LCD on the back of your digital camera. |
