Default What do you think of my logo?

I really struggle to come up with ideas for myself so please tell me honestly what you think of my latest logo concept?

My logo concept - tell it like it is?

I was playing with the idea of my initials (F & O) in whitespace and came up with the top idea, then noticed it looked a little like a dog if rotated.

I'm trying for contemporary, clean and memorable, going for form first and then incorporating colours later.

What do you think? Too simple? Too abstract? Just crap? Or do you actually like it?

Please tell it like it is folks, I can take it

I like the first one the best. Simple, clean, and to the point. I wouldn't recommend using the initials to symbolize a dog, unless there is someway your business is using traits of one.
Otherwise, it would make no sense.

I had to read your explanation, but it only works with the first one. If youre gonna go with it though, Id be tempted to raise the text portion to the right and make it even with the black box.

I think the symbol is great. Its an easy to remember abstract symbol which will be recognised easily. Is the text really part of the "logo" I mean part of a website header sure.

Think Adobe with their Red square with a white stylised A. Think mercedes benz (or any of the car manufactures) The best symbols can be recognised without text.

Helps with brand awareness.

I like the layout of #3 best, but the icon is too abstract for me, that is until the image of the dog gets into your head. Even knowing what it is supposed to be, the "F" looks like an "E" to me so it still doesn't make any sense.

Thanks all

I really do hate my initials, they are SOOO boring to work with and I just get huge mental blanks, this was really just fooling around wasting time when I noticed that it looked sorta cool (in my opinion) when flipped around. I really don't like the first, it looks to simple and lacks any creativity.

Your spot on there mate, the text isn't really part of the "logo", but the text needs to be considered with the logo as they are usually together. I'm really trying to stay away from the current trends of lots of dots or lines that seems to be on every big name web / advertising firm at the moment and get some really simple.

I've actually got heaps of awesome ideas for using another business name, but all my business management teachers said with such an interesting name like Free O'Toole I'd be stupid not to market it rather than a random business name.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to tell me your opinions

#1 & #3 are OK. I prefer using a modern font instead. 'FREE O'TOOL' looks too plain and neutral. Further kerning maybe required as well.

Some fonts from Famous Fonts - 1001 Free Fonts may work for you.

I don't get letters out of the logo at all. If I stretch really, really hard, I can see and "E" and an "O," but certainly not an "F."

The orientation in 2-4 looks to me like a person crawling around on all fours. The round "head" pretty much makes seeing a dog very unlikely. Some pointy ears might help, I don't know.

Now, of course, this is just like one of those visual puzzles that can be either a rabbit or a duck, a lady or a hag, etc, because if I go BACK to it and focus on the white space instead of the black, I can see the letters. Perhaps picking a different color for the font and matching the currently white space to that would make the "letters" more readily visible.

2-4 still look lik a person on all fours, and while I am trying (and failing) to not be crass, conjure up cheap porno music in my demented mind.

Now you're talking - have a I mentioned I sold pornography for a living for a while I've met legit porn stars and all

Hey LoveDSLR, I hear you about the keming*, it's the last thing I worry about as it's a waste of time kerning text that's going to get scrapped anyway.

Not sure about that free font site though, in my experience free font's usually cost more in time spent getting them spot on than you pay for a premium font, especially if you end up using it for different things. In saying that there's usually some well made free font's on sites like smashing that save hours upon hours of scrolling through free sites looking for something good.

I actually have quite a collection of premium fonts after 5 years in the game, but still like sticking to the tried and true classics (like helvetica neue). I'll have a look collection and see if there's anything that's a bit more modern though, might give me an excuse to spend more money at myfonts too

*Keming is the result of incorrect kerning

No problem. Every designer has his or her bag of tricks. I did Corporate Identity and taught DTP & Graphics Design a while back.
