Default Ghetto Gear WooD style

I shoot a lot of surf shots. Usually I'm never in sight of my jeep or truck, and I'm always paranoid of someone ripping off the rest of my gear. For a while I'd just wrap my camera up in a towel, and carry it in a duffel bag. Then I worried about locking up the brakes, and having it launch into the dash. A few times I'd just empty everything out of my bag, and just take what I was going to use, but that became a hassle. So I decided to make a box that wood fit my body, 1.4 TC, and 300 f/4 lens, which is what I shoot surf with.

Definitely ghetto, but the camera, and lens are well protected. Just toss in a few SD cards, and I can shoot without worries.

Pretty neat. I don't think it looks very ghetto, but even if it did that's an added security feature. ;-)

If you are handy with wood working, that is good, or you could just get a Pelican case. What musicians call "roadie road tough".

Linky

My company used these cases to house out seismograph units.

I think calling this a DIY camera case would be more appropriate than a ghetto camera case. It looks very well made and I would never consider it to be cheap or of lesser quality than what you would go out and buy.

I happen to be handy in the wood shop, and I like what you did. Looks like a nice, well-made case for your camera. I didn't want to sound like what you did was a bad thing, I was just pointing out other options for those that might not be handy in the wood shop, or didn't have access to any of the right "toys" to build something like that.

Woodworking questions: Did you consider using a box joint for construction? 3/4 plywood or something thinner?

The sides, top, and bottom are 3/8 plywood. The front, and back are a 1X6. The foam is from an old gun case I had.

I use to have access to a wood shop, but now all I had to use was a circular saw, jig saw, belt sander, and a drill.

I looked into the pelican cases, but had this wood laying around, and I love to make stuff. Inside dimensions are 16 X 8 X 8.

I gotta say I like the style...
maybe I will have to "borrow" your inspiration and have my father make me something similar!

I just got in from changing out the brass handle to a black tool box handle, and sprayed the rest of the hardware with semi flat black, which is the color of the box.

I thought about sanding it down to a glassy smoothness, but that wood take the ghetto look out of it. If anyone sees it in my jeep or truck, I don't want it to look so good they might want it.
