No, that would not be necessary. Anything you use to view them on your internal HD, can be used to view them on a external HD that is attached via USB port or any other method.

So what could I do? I only see a RAW file not a photo. So when I want to edit a raw photo I cant tell what photo I am editing until I transfer it over to photoshop. Is there a viewer I can install on external drive?

What operating system(Windows XP, Windows 7, etc...) are you using? Can you view your thumbnails of RAW files on your internal HD? What camera do the RAW files come from?

I am using win xp. I cant view raw files on my internal. I can only view them in photoshop as far as I know. When I click thumbnails I can only view jpegs ( as that is the format I save with after editing). I am shooting with a canon 40d

Do you mean you can't view thumbnails of RAW files in windows, but you can open the file in PS and view the photo?

Yes. I only see a file for a raw photo when i click thumbnail. I can only see the actual photo when I open it in photoshop. Is that normal? Or is there a way I can set up windows to view RAW thumbnail images?

Windows Powertoys. Scroll down to RAW image thumbnailer. There are some other apps there that might be helpful too.

I had the same problem and downloaded a program called ViewNX. I googled my camera make/model and RAW viewing to find the appropriate program/version. You'll probably find info on the Adobe site as well.

You can download the Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer & Viewer & then thumbnails will show up as images & when you click on them they will open with an interface similar to Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. You can get it here.
