Default SYS - It's getting there! Is it getting there?

So we've had the new SYS section live now for almost a week andit appears to be holding up. As you might remember we got off to a bit of a rough start and had a thread running where there was some friction and I let myself get a bit angry and posted a private message - well, we've worked through that and there will be no more posting PM's and no more outrage!! Well at least that's what we're hoping for. I want to apologise for being short and a bit crabbed off...

I want SYS to work and I want it to help us as photographers - to share our work here at dPS and not have it slip to the bottom of a big pile...

So, how's it working for YOU and "I don't like it" isn't an answer - if you have a constructive criticism, I'm well up for hearing it... So fire away - is it working for you?

Sime.

Hi Sime
I think of two words - "Diluted" and "Spe******ed". The spe******ation means that there may be potential spe******ts who may not be motivated by the work of others because they don't venture beyond their comfort zones, whereas before they would be hit by the occasional great shot in a specific category that gave no clue in the title but sparked their curiosity. I hope they develop a system of apportioning their visits to (say) 10% quick survey of spe******ed areas then back to their little niche's, otherwise the old saying might apply :-

"If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got",

Thanks for all your hard work

Mod-ly-ness aside, as a forum participant I like it.

The reason I like it is because there are specific areas of photography I want to look at, and specific ones I don't. Yep, maybe it's staying in my comfort zone, but it gives me more of a motivation to look at SYS because I can be more assured I won't wind up coming across things that just don't interest me. Will the areas I like change? Probably, and that's up to me to look at the different areas then. But, I like the order, and I like not having posts drop off to the second, third and fourth page within minutes.

It's not ideal, in my view.

For one, it makes the general forum too big.

I suggest sub-forums for each section of a general SYS forum, which should probably go where it used to be.

Personally, it just seems so expansive and trite for a 'no critique please, I'm posting up to share, in the hopes that people might give praise and/or acknowledge my efforts to create the image'.

It may not be as simple as that, admittedly, but that's the general feel of the forum. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I feel that critiques need to be the primary focus of a photography forum. Nowadays, one can share their shots anywhere - links in signatures with Flickr and other websites allow this to happen. People come here for help on their photography, mostly, or to help others and/or mix with other photogs. SYS is important - but that can happen anywhere, whereas genuine critiquing is more vital and distinctly rarer to find.

Ooooh when did it all change?? Damn me for having a life

I like it!

Surely having less traffic is a GOOD thing? It is disheartening to post some shots up and within minutes having them bumped down to page 5 by either people slinging up 10 threads in one hit (which has happened) or at peak times just the sheer weight of traffic.

Also its good because you can stick to viewing what you like. Personally i have absolutely zero interest in HDR images so its great to be able to get away from them, same with peoples projects. These can be viewed at leisure rather than having it in your face "woohoo here's 29/365!" type thing.

All that is said, of course, before ive even posted a picture in the new sections lol

Actually i agree with the jist of this. I think more critiquing should be permitted in SYS and should be allowed to happen without being given permission to happen iyswim.

I actually like it, I'm usually quite busy and only visit DPS in short regular bursts. During this time I am usually interested in certain topics, macros, animals, landscapes, etc. This new set up gives me the opportunity to visit these areas and bypass the parts of photography I am not as keen about at this time. I still get a chance to see the work of old friends and now I am meeting new ones who are also interested in the things I am interested in. I know I want to learn to do portraits in the future and when that time comes I can visit these areas and learn from the people who are regulars to that part of photography. One suggestion though, I believe pets should be a different section to wildlife and animals, the animal section should be animals captured in the wild. Other than that great job Mods.

I think it's a bit too much, but then again, no one listens to me anyways.

I would combine the SYS and critique to have only one "share your stuff" section.

my $.02
