Default Windows 7 64

Hey guys long time no see! have not had much time to get on lately, my son has appendicitis and was in the hospital for a few weeks and I had surgery awhile back myself. I am in the market for a new laptop and all of the my finals choices are running windows 7 64. I have searched here and Google and can not find a straight answer if and what programs will be compatible with this operating system. Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance!

Yes, everything should work fine. I know that's a broad statement, but I researched it a few months ago and it looks like the compatibility issues in Vista have been taken care of.

Just don't try to run 10+ year-old programs on it.

I have Windows 7 64 bit, and have no problems with any of my photo programmes, nor any others. The problems with Vista seem to have been resolved.

There are probably millions (literally) of programs out there, and nobody's going to put together a list of all of them and how they do or don't work with Windows 7 64-bit.

Most recent programs will work, although a few might need to be flagged to run in XP compatibility mode. Older programs will usually work if run in compatibility mode, but getting them installed can sometimes be a chore when the installer needs to be run in compatibility mode, too.

Office 97 does not play well with Vista and Windows 7, especially 64-bit. Microsoft's attitude is "Catch a clue and quit trying to run 13-year-old software; go buy Office 2007 or Office 2010."

The big challenge is device drivers. Drivers for scanners, printers, cameras, calibrators, stuff like that. You'll have to try to get 64-bit versions of the drivers from the manufacturers' web sites (if the manufacturer is still in business). If there's no 64-bit driver, there's a good chance that you won't be able to use that device with the new computer. And a small chance that you can.

Would be nice if they thought that way with IE6 and ditched support, I guess they only care when they are selling a product

On topic, I haven't had any compatibility issues with any programs since switching to Vista a few months after it was released.

Sorry I had left out the key part of my question, (did not expect you to put together a whole list of programs) I had only been awake for a day and a half giving my son IV antibiotics. I was referring to photo editing software but many of you have already answered that for me so thank you again.

So are you all saying that Canon DPP and ZoomBrowser will work with the 64 bit?

Working for a software company I can say for sure that not ALL software works as designed with 7 and all of its windows greatness. I would suggest going to the company web-site for the products you use/want and seeing (If it don't say on the site most company's have an e-mail tech support section) if it is indeed compatible. I do believe that is going to be your best course of action.
