Sounds like you are looking for a 24-70mm f2.8 lens. If the Canon is out of your range look at the sigma 24-70mm 2.8. Or A Canon 100mm f2.8 while it is a macro lens it can double as a portrait lens. Check the sale boards on POTN or Fred Miranda

You may want to look at the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM lens as well.

If you are on a budget, the lens you may want to consider is the EF 50mm f/1.8 II. It's about US$100, new. While the other lenses put forward by the previous posters are great lenses, they cost considerably more. The 24-70 f/2.8 is $1400. And the 85/1.8 is around $400.

When asking for a lens recommendation, it's usually best to state a budget, and what you plan to use the lens for.

If you can't even afford $100, then you may want to look into adapting a manual focus lens. 50mm f/1.8 used to be the kit lens for dSLRs before zooms came into being, so there are a number of them in older, orphaned mounts [particularly M42], that you can find for <$40. You will, however, have to budget in for an adapter ring as well ($20-$100), and you won't have autofocus, or aperture control from the body.
