It is battery powered... and its hand held... and we probably all have two or three of them in our house, that we use daily...
not part of the camera.

it could also be a gps receiver or some sort of metal detector, but those arent too common in every household

Yes... it is a remote control. It is a cropped down shot of lens on the end of the remote.

ohhh, I'm late but my guess was wrong anyway. Was thinking some sort of a blacklight, but I'm late and wrong. two strikes for me.
