in GIMP:
I cropped, adjusted the curves, created a white vignette, adjusted the contrast and color balance and then sharpened.

Cropped, then used Adjustments: Shadows & Highlights to bring out some details. A little dodge and burn here and there. hand sharpened details. Film blur around edges to put more emphasis on face also added a slight vignette. Created a duplicate layer removed some noise from the top layer, created a layer mask then "erased" areas I wanted to preserve details in ie. around eyes, hair, and other prominent features. merged layers converted to B&W, adjusted levels, added a subtle layer of warm toning to finish it off.

Default B&W Conversion

-initially adjusted exposure, blacks, recovery, and fill light (Lightroom 2)
-desaturated all sliders in HSL instead of using grayscale option
-adjusted luminance levels (HSL panel)
-brush masks (for exposure, sharpness, clarity, contrast) in eye area
-specular highlights increased slightly with brush tool
-lighted corner of eyes with brush tool
-adjusted tone curve sliders
-adjusted camera calibration (hue sliders)
-post crop vignette

"Doc" (B&W conversion) (1 of 1)

Seems you all really like to play around with the faces. I'd happily post some of your favorites if you would like to submit them for the challenge. Just send me a pm with the html code for a medium sized image and a link to a larger image and I'll post it. If you dont have the codes, it's ok I can still post them without it
