Wow I just have to say wonderful pictures everyone. I absolutely loved paging through this thread... growing up in small-town Ohio I have always had a soft spot for pictures like these. Really makes me feel miles from home out here in Japan though lol.

Hey just seen this challenge Mike - here is my contribution - from Marble Bar in the far northern Pilbara of Western Australia.
Marble Bar was founded in 1893 after alluvial gold was discovered in 1891 and at its peak boasted a population of around 5,000. However the gold rush was short-lived when prospectors were drawn away by gold discoveries around Kalgoorlie and the town now only has a population of around 400. Marble Bar has been known as ‘the hottest town in Australia” since setting a record in April 1924 for 161 consecutive days of temperatures over 100F (37.8C), and its highest maximum 49.2C.
In 1895 the Government Offices, now listed by the National Trust, were constructed out of local stone, featuring elaborate stuccoed windows. The size of the buildings reflect the Government’s belief in the future of the Pilbara Goldfields, however the building’s design does not take into consideration the harsh climate.
The iconic Iron Clad Hotel, with its distinctive corrugated iron sheet cladding is a great place for a cold drink. I can recommend the fish & chips!

Less than two months ago, Elmwood got hit by tornadoes....for the second time in a year!
This is looking southwest from the town square. The gap to the right of the stop sign used to be the hardware store. Looking south from the square, the storefronts and roofs were removed by the storm, yet one of the tallest trees in the square took minimal damage! I think the Parkview is closed until further notice. And yet, in true small town style, the fact that half their downtown is missing doesn't seem to bother them too much. Every Sunday evening there is a free band concert at the gazebo in the square. Here, early arrivals stake out their good seats at least an hour before the band shows up. The band has members that range in age from their teens to their seventies, and they sounded pretty good this evening! |

Isn't it amazing how a tornado can do massive damage to one thing and leave something next to it untouched? I'm also amazed at the resiliency of small towns. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jill! Now that's a hot place! I wonder how people an manage to live in a place where it's over 100 F for half a year. Amazing! I can see why the Iron Clad Hotel would be a popular place. Isn't it just like the government to build a beautiful and ornate building totally neglecting the practical aspects of an area. A very interesting post!

This sign reminded me of being a kid and seeing the Sinclair gas stations, at some of the stations the buildings were actually shaped like the dino icon on the sign. I seen an old closed down one about ten years ago along hwy 19 along the west coast of Fl. near Hudson which is between Weeki Wachi and Port Richey. This is just an old sign near a corner west of Springfield Ohio.
