Default What Would You Do (#91)

It's the weekend, so that means it's time for our WWYD post-processing thread.

This week's picture comes from windrider86, one of our fabulous mods.

The rules for the game are simple as can be. Go edit the photo in your program of choice, then come back and show us your end result and tell us how you got to it (so before you close that post-processing program make sure to take note of your steps!). It's as easy as that.

If you'd like your photo to be the subject of one of these threads, simply drop me a PM with links to the medium and large versions of your photos. If you've been waiting for the right time to do it, the queue is short right now, so there's no better time to join in the fun!

Now, let's see what you would do.

oohh I like that version, great job! So had to have a go at my own image:
first I created a new raster layer and filled it with a gradient. Merged down and duplicate again. sveral layers using Topaz Adjust to create different effects. Next on yet another layer i took a poster from The Mummy and erased around most of it. used the displacement map to create distortion to try and make it fit with the hills. and this is what I came up withwwyd
cant wait to see what the rest of you do!!!

Wink Nothing Fancy

I didn't want to overkill with effects, so I just tried a few things in GIMP to improve the overall look without changing the photo too much.

Default Sand to Snow

I thought it would be fun to turn the sand into snow! Here's what I came up with:
WWYD91: Sand to Snow
Here's what I did (in GIMP):
- Major adjustments to the curves to bring out the contrast
- Applied a custom gradient map to colourise the sand and turn it to ice
- Cropped the original to remove some of the bottom detail
- Added a new layer with the clouds on it (from this picture)
- Applied the 'Oilify' filter to make the clouds more in keeping with the foreground
- Tidied up the mask to make as convincing job as possible
- Took a copy of the foreground layer and applied it in 'Burn' mode with 27% opacity
- Merged all layers
- Applied a gausian blur
- Added some lens flare
- Added a border
Phew!

My take:

For WWYD #91, on DPS

On GIMP, I:

1) Cropped, to try and emphasize the diagonals;
2) Converted to B&W with channel mixer;
3) Added a bit of drop shadow;
4) Reduced contrast just a bit;
5) Used the "Retinex" effect to create texture; and
6) De-noised the sky, which became noisy when applying the Retinex effect.

That's it.

Very nice photo, windrider. Is it close to home?

It's actually the Great Sand Dunes located somewhat near Alamosa Colorado. Its about a 2.5 hour drive from home. If you are interested this is the link to the park http://www.nps.gov/grsa/. I didnt get to go in as the line was soooo long and I had all ready been up since 4 shooting cranes at sunsrise. Was pooped and just wanted to go home

PS attempt wwyd91

This is my sad attempt at photo transforming with Elements 7 and silhouette from Print Shop.....I bumbled thru adding camel to this pic, then added more contrast, sunset color in sky...and distorted (twirled) a circle in the sand to depict a sandstorm starting up. Frustration factor was high...but here it is...tis mine own!!

. . . and learned maybe 5 new tool functions? Frustration is a small price for a work of Art. You did well.

i liked how the snowy mountain looked like folds of fabric.....

wwyd #91

cropped down to just a field of the snow.....layer of a surface blur of 5px and a low threshold.....reduced opacity....added a light vigenette of the border selection and set this layer to screen......
