In Lightroom 2:

Lowered the exposure a tad
Boosted the recovery to 100
Boosted the fill light to 85
Boosted Blacks to 30
Increased brightness and contrast
Increased clarity to 100
Increased vibrance to 55
Lowered saturation to -65
Lowered blue and purple saturation a bit

Something about this image struck me as a great setup for a watercolor painting - so I went in that direction:

Shopped

PP in Photoshop CS4:

Adjusted exposure with an Exposure layer
Increased contrast with using custom levels and curves
Adjusted color saturation and balance to bring out the natural colors of the image
Added texture layer - water color paper
Added frame

wow guys, super wonderful edits here. I found this image a really tough one and thanks to you all it holds interest again, so I had yet another go at it. Simple steps, Topaz Simplify (buzz sim preset) and then Topaz Adjust but I forgot which preset

Here is my take on it.

1. selected the sky and added a blue photo filter layer
2. faked a cross processing effect using Alien Skin Exposure 2 Lomo - Fuji Film
3. sharpened the image using the LAB Lightness channel with an unsharp mask (150, 50, 0)

That's it.

I used GIMP.
Auto white balance which made the sand dunes greenish inspiring a spring theme.
I selected only the sky and made it a bit more blue.
I selected the top edges of the hills and brightened them and added a little contrast
Then I selected the sky again and added the Super Nova.

Default Last rays of sun in desert

Copy layer first, change mode to multiply, merge, new copy, change mode to overlay, merge. Remove sky and replace with a self-made image. Make new copy, change mode to overlay and add layermask with circular fill. Merge and rescale. Edited with Gimp.
