Cthulhu is a creature from HP Lovecraft's books. It's kind of like a winged octopus like reptile thing. See the picture at the Wikipedia article and their description of how Cthulhu is used as a pop culture reference.

Now, in my search to find the Wikipedia link or any other link that explained it better than I could, I also found the "Tales of the Plush Cthulhu" which I highly recommend... if only because it's about as twisted as my own sense of humour
