Default What Would You Do (#66)

Yes, there is a WWYD this week

This week's WWYD is from one of our mods, windrider86, and is a photo of her grandson taken with her cell phone.

Not available larger (unless windrider adds it )

The rules are the same as always, edit the photo, come back, show us what you did and talk us through it. If you'd like your photo to be the subject of one of these thread, just drop me a PM with a link to a medium and large version of the photo (if you have it). I'm always on the lookout for new photos to add to the list.

Now, let's see what you would do!

Default my try!

Hi, people!

It's long i haven't done any WWWD. So, now that i have a bit of time, i'll be fully present (for the next two months ).

I tried this:

WWWD #66 Calender

Pushed up the levels, corrected the colors, darkened the surrounding(curves), sharpened all, reduced the noise(color & Luminance), clarified & color boosted the kid, fixed the skin shine, at last, added scrapbook tapes and calender. Voilà.

Hi, Windriver!
May be you should patent your PP. Or at least, create a Photoshop action and name it Riddick Effect (like in the film: Riddim - Pitch Black)

Default So ya wanna be in pictures, hunh, kid?

First ya gotta clean up yer act.

A CCW rotation and a crop start things off.

- On copy of original, little bits of snack are cloned away, as well as parts of the shirt.
- Right arm and shoulder are copied, made larger, then lined up with shirt.
- All highlights that appear blurred vertically, are smudged into dots.
- Second copy of original is placed over this on Darken mode, 30% Opacity.
- First layer is Contrasted, Blue hue increased slightly, some Red added
- Saturation helps bring color to cheeks.
- Third copy of original is placed over second, all but hair is deleted.
- Lighten, erase to edges to show top of head better.
- Add vignette to focus attention and do away with background

I'm sorry, but the picture is underexposed, small and blurry. No amount of pp skills will save it. I say reshoot with the proper equipment.

Actually, this is sort of what this challenge is all about...i.e. "what would you do" to this picture that is underexposed, small, and blurry (your words). I'm assuming that there is a great deal of sentimental value placed on this photo because it is the submitter's grandchild...how wonderful it would be to salvage such a shot, even if it can't be totally perfect in the end. This thread isn't about how you would have taken the shot differently in another situation, it's about what you can do to save, improve, or change a shot using editing software.

Thanks, Teewinot. I saw it another way:

iNeegma,

Just when I thought I had begun to figure out this whole post-processing deal, I discover that indeed, I was only fooling myself. I have no doubt that you must be an accomplished artisan of the electonic medium, and base your comment on the fact that you could edit the underexposed, small blurry image, but that it would be a waste of your time, since "no amount of pp skills will save it."

Well, don't we look silly, thinking that the experience of trying different ways of seeing and editing a photograph, could in any way be helpful, or enjoyable. Have you looked at the other 65 previous WWYD submissions? We might benefit from having you advise us which of those we have also wasted our time practicing on.

It's rare that we get a truly insightful critic who can at a glance determine the possibilities - or lack of them - in a photograph. Most of us need to actually try an edit before we find it too difficult or unworthy of our effort.

Perhaps Nicole can send you a copy of the next WWYD before she posts it and you can explain to her why you approve or disapprove of her choice. That way we will not mistakenly waste time on an impossible task.
