Here's my attempt:

All I did was
  • Adjust Curves on everything but the sky
  • Added level adjustment for the front deer as I thought it was really bright
  • Burned some of the highlights from the Sun on the front deer
  • Cloned out the sign on the fence.
  • And slightly cropped it

Those are some excellent works by Windrider and Firemaine. Kfk2 did a good job bringing out some colors. Teewinot I like the route you took, except that I am not sure if this is a good candidate for BW. I wish to see some more.

Great ideas

I attempted to take these creatures away from man's influence, so I

removed the one deer's "earring" and
cloned out the fence.

I believe I made the scene more peaceful by removing the "growth" from the hindquarters of the deer in the forefront (maybe it only bothered me).

I then darkened the greenery since those poor creatures looked like they were eating anemic grass, then lightened up some of the tree foliage and deer shadow that became too dark.

Next I softened the edges where the trees met the prince's photoshopped-in sky. It was a bit pixelated and "edgy."

One last delicate unsharpen mask and finite.

It may be a bit dark for some, but I like the vivid greens, blue and browns in the deer.

Nice job dlaf! It looks much more "wild" now.

dlaf - cloning of the fence was a good idea. I like the pp version. Yes it does appear a bit dark but then the colors look better overall.
