I used photoshop CS2
I changed the skies color a bit and cloned out part of the engines smoke, and used a filter for the sun and the trains headlights, as wellas cropping the original.
hope you like it.
Sorry can´t explain it better but I'm not too familiar with all english terms for photo editing.

what would you do

First thing I did was to create two more versions, each a bit lighter than the next. Next, i created an hdr version - adjusted settings to what I liked. Then I ran a noise removal to smooth it out but the tree tops seemed to have abit of a pixelation problem so I duplicated the layer and gave it a gaussian blur set at 5 and set the blend mode to overlay. This still didnt work so I cloned the tops of the trees with the sky above it. Then I did a gardient blue layer to give it the blue sky and a slight vingette for taste.

I love this idea!

train

First, I brought it into Photoshop 7. Then I adjusted the levels. I selected the sky area and added a slight blue and white gradient. I unselected and went to Hue/Saturation and pumped it up just a little, then I pumped up the red channel to give the train a little boost.

Hi Windrider

Nothing very clever! On the first one, I created a duplicate layer, adjusted the layer to get the smoke looking black, and used a mask only to show the smoke. I also darkened the building in the background and removed the pole on the right.

To do the second I picked an area of dark smoke from the first, inverted the colour, (make it steam not smoke!) pasted it into 3 layers stretched and rotated it on the 3 different layers and moved it into place - one either side and one in front.

The using a mask I softened the edges and exposed the train for each layer. I used a fuzzy brush with opacity set at about 10 - 20% to get the slightly misty look - I didn't want to remove all the steam. The great this was that it doesn't matter if the edges aren't sharp.

Just a change in the blue and red curves in CS3. I liked the overall composition of the picture and thought it just needed to have the shadow detail punched up a bit. This changed the saturation in the sky but the color was pleasing to me and showed contrast with the smoke.

After much fiddling around:

The first challenge was to lighten the picture without making it look too washed out - the curves tool proved invaluable here. After I had done that, I realised that there were people in the picture! I decided to crop to a 16:9 format and did some work (in a rather hasty fashion) to make the people more visible.

I also boosted the colours a bit using the channel mixer and added a very subtle blue to white gradient layer, set to "darken only" mode and turned down to be barely visible but add just a touch of depth to the sky.

A better exposed picture would make a much stronger starting point but this could work as a reasonable rescue (especially if I had started work on a larger original and applied my sharpening after resizing to fit the 600px limit ).

Everyone has such wonderful ideas - I am looking forward to saving the other pictures that I took that day.
