I need some help! I just purchased an HS10 and took some pics and an HD video. I imported it into my computer and the video is great, but I can't get any sound! The video will play on RealPlayer and Windows Media Player, but no audio comes out! I can hear the audio on playback on my camera, and on my wife's newer laptop.
I have a Fujitsu Lifebook with 32 bit operating system, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, and Windows Vista Home Premium. I think I'm just missing some sort of codec. Does anybody have any ideas? Last edited by pyrodude; 11-20-2010 at 05:09 AM. |

You might think that`s a stupid suggestion but you have no idea how many times Ive spent a couple minutes trying to figure out what was wrong, when my laptop when was on mute.

This camera records in .mov. Try changing the file extension to .mp4. Many players goof the codec for mov files but will play in mp4.
The big deal may be that one machine has quicktime installed and the other does not. The audio is obviously there you just have to have the right codec installed to hear it. Hope this helps Keep Shooting

Hi,
In the camera I have, it gives me the option to record with or without sound. You may want to check your settings and see if your camera has that as an option too. Cheers! Oops my bad, I read the post too fast. You do have sound during playback on camera. Sorry.

You change the file extension on your computer. You need to have your computer set to show all file extensions. Mine is set this way all the time.

Changing an extension of a video file won't do anything, you can just mess things up even more.
Extensions are used just by your operating system (and some programs) to identify file types, but, many of the video formats (not video codecs) are actually so called container formats, and inside they can have video files of various codecs. A file with an extension .avi or .wmv can hold video coded in many different codecs. There is a 4 bit string of characters embedded in each video file which tells a video player/software which codec to use to decode it. It's called 4CC code. In your case, your system simply lacks the codecs needed. I recommend you download and install K Lite codec pack, it's the most complete and stable codec pack out there. With it you also get Media Player Classic, which is a very stable and light player. You can adjust file associations during installing. Note: When installing, when you get to the part where you have a drop-down list, select "Lots of stuff" and then click next. If it finds any broken codecs during the installation and asks you to repair them, just click OK (Yes).. |

A possible answer to the original problem, try VLC, it's a free program so you have nothing to lose. |
