A possible answer to the original problem, try VLC, it's a free program so you have nothing to lose.
Yeah, I know, I wasn't referring to your or Izzy's post, it's a good thing to point out how to change these things. I personally think it's a stupid move from Microsoft to hide them by default, I always turn that off.

K Lite is also free and so is Media Player Classic that comes with it. It's a complete codec pack with all the latest codecs, it's only imperfection IMO is that it doesn't provide a possibility to update them, you have to download a new version every once in a while, it you want it to stay updated.

Actually I do it all the time. I have worked extensively with video over the last 5 years. I know what I am talking about even if you don't.

Care to tell me why it works and what the compression codecs are for the vid and audio without googling them and why they work this way. I am waiting for your infallible knowledge to grace us.

I know why but I am waiting for your answer. Please tell us all how the .mov container works.

Just try to edit a .mov file natively in Sony Vegas Pro. It will not do it until the file extension is changed. Please tell us that you know more than the people at Sony.

What? Changing extensions? I didn't say it works for the video files. As far as I understand this matter (and I'm by no means an expert in this field), each video file has an embedded code that tells the software in use which codec to use to unpack it. I think there can be different video codecs and different audio codecs within the same video file extension/format. Codecs (Codec stands for coder/decoder) are different ways to pack and/or compress uncompressed video or audio material. I remember reading that one of video codecs (can't remember which one, maybe you can fill me in) works by analysing frame by frame and memorizes only the new/changing pixels in each new frame, therefore saving hdd space. I know that mp3 audio codec compresses the file by analysing the frequency band that is actually being used at a given time and truncates the space that holds no data for that particular time.

I just wrote you a summary of pretty much everything I know about video codecs, without googleing anything. I have no idea about .mov format, I don't use it. I didn't mean to offend you. Did I say something very wrong and untrue about the subject?? If I did, please correct me.

None taken.

I'm generally a very curious person when it comes to technical stuff, I often want to know how things work although I don't actually need it. Hence I know a bit about this and that, or if I used to know some subject in deep, then I usually forget it with time, since I don't use it. I'm aware that my knowledge of many things is only skin-deep, so I try not to sound like a smart-ass when explaining something. Maybe I do sometimes.
