Default Fujifilm Finepix x100

You people who know more about the technical side of photography and cameras, tell me could this be as yummy as it seems?

Fujifilm Finepix x100

I'm already so in love with the retro look.....I might even be blinded by it....But owning this beauty would be so amazing. Is there more to love than just the looks?
I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-H50 that I love also and I don't wan't my next camera to be one of those big massive heavy DSLRs.

I've also given a thought for this camera:
Olympus pen ep2
I'm especially drawn to the art filters...

Would one of these cameras be a good addition to what I'm using atm? What do you think?

Thanks for looking

The X100 is yummy, but the pricetag ($1000) is not, especially since it's a fixed-lens camera, not an interchangeable one. Not only can you not swap out the lens, the lens that's on the camera doesn't zoom. This is a camera for a very specific kind of shooter, and won't have nearly the all-in-one versatility most bridge P&S digicams (like your Cybershot) do. That viewfinder technology looks amazing, though, and for folks who were contemplating the Leica X1, it's definitely a viable alternative. However, judgement is still not in, as the camera hasn't actually been in anybody's hands, yet and is unlikely to be for a while.

Micro four-thirds is cheaper and more flexible. But Sony NEX right now is the darling of the large-sensor compact set, because it has a 1.5x crop factor, not 2x, like the micro four-thirds.

The larger your sensor (smaller your crop factor), the better your high iso performance is, and the thinner the DoF you can accomplish.

In addition, Nikon and Canon have announced they're entering this arena and nobody knows what they're going to be coming up with just yet.

If you are going to go with a micro four-thirds camera, the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens is probably something you'll want to budget for.

Thanks Inkista! I don't think my future camera has to have all the things my cybershot does (the zoom for example) because I'm not planning on getting rid of the cybershot (because it still rocks and is incredibly versatile and hopefully will work ok for many years to come).

I hear you in the fixed lens, though...In the Olympus you could swap them..

I'll look into your suggestions. Although I'm not going to buy anything any time soon since I don't have the money, but it's fun to think ahead

Yup. For me, otoh, since I already own a bagful of lenses and Canon camera bodies, I could totally get having the X100 if it cost half as much. Of all the fixed lenses I'd want, the equivalent of a 35mm f/2 is exactly the one I'd choose as my only lens (fast enough for available light, wide enough for landscapes, long enough for portraits, close enough for almost-macro work). I'm a prime addict, anyway.

Yup, window shopping is a fine hobby. Another thing you may want to consider is looking at the older generation of micro four-thirds cameras, rather than just the current one and looking at used prices. There were a lot of folks who got an E-P1 and then decided it wasn't for them when the GF-1 came out . The Olympus E-P1 is actually pretty inexpensive compared to the E-P2, and ditto the Panasonic G-1 and G-2, compared to the G-10. And, also, Olympus did come out with a lower-end four-thirds, the E-PL1. Highly recommend doing some window-shopping over at the four-thirds website.

...and now that the GF-2 is out....

The Fuji X100 is cheap for people who don't have to look at the price or wish to get a Leica M9 + 35 f/2 CRON as a starter kit. Notice Fuji already announced a shortage of X100 from the higher than expected demand.

Some people are complaining about the fixed lens but the 35mm (FF) is the favorite focal length for street photography (manual-focus, zone focusing). The thing I miss the most is that the Fujinon isn't as good as the Leica CRON.

Many people loves the Olympus but I prefer Panasonic micro 4/3 instead. If you're into manual lenses + adapter then Olympus IBS is a bonus. Furthermore, I rather pp RAW instead of using the art filters.

If you prefer micro 4/3 AF lenses then you have to aware of the limited selections. Also, some lenses don't balance well with smaller bodies. Another thing to remember is the current sensor technology isn't that good in low noise high ISO (ceiling ~ ISO 800).

BTW, I have both E-PL1 and GF-1.

Actually, I think it's more the X100 is cheaper and faster with a better viewfinder for people who were contemplating a Leica X1. Same deal: APS-C sensor, fixed 24mm f/2.8 lens. I mean, with the M9 and 'cron, you're getting full frame and a 'cron with a possibility of upgrading to a 'lux when you win the lottery.

I'm too poor to dream about the LUX so I'm thinking more about adding VC 50 f/1.1 & 90 CRON instead. .

I use my FujiX100 for street photography and getting close to people without scaring them.
People will tell you all the time "wow", does it still work ? (thinking its an old machine!).
Women love it

It took me a few weeks to "adjust" to it (owning a Nikon D90 and D700)
The shutter at first feels weird

Once you get used to "its" frame", you will move around it (physically), and start to really get close to people

Great quality picture
No sound on the shutter !
