Our new puppy is getting a fresh start learning to live indoors, with a dominant much smaller Chihuahua. Just needs her own bed now.

                        Assignment: "Fresh Start"

This fresh start photo will be very different then most. Heck, I won't win anyway with all of you great photographers! I met this woman today and she effected me in ways I didn't realize I could be. Her ancestor, a young woman, came over from Africa as a slave. She was bound and chained and the fear she felt must have been unimaginable. She and the plantation owner fell in love. From this union came a young woman named Kathleen. She was born a slave due to her mother being a slave. She fell in love and married a man who was also a slave on the plantation. Kathleen was a very strong woman. She sued the State and won her freedom. She then bought her husband's freedom. They were a part of the culture that has been completely ripped out of the history books. They were the "free people of color" in New Orleans. Due to race, civil war and political correctness the history of these extremely interesting and historically important people have been lost.

Fast forward a few generations to this woman. She is a College professor who teaches history. She spends her weekends volunteering at the plantation where her roots are, educating people about her family's legacy. How is this a fresh start to me? I am a mom and like many I have hopes and dreams for my children. It hit me in that moment: If you are a slave woman and mother what do you hope and wish for concerning your own children? I then looked at this woman, standing in the same spot her great great grandmother stood in chains. I realized then this is what they dreamed for their own children. This woman is the fresh start for all of the very strong women in her legacy that fought for civil rights both as an African American and as a woman. She is everything they wanted to be and couldn't. She is their fresh start.
