To start charging

After all the parents at my daughters crèche seeing photos I took of a friends 3rd birthday party I'm getting the usual "you must be a pro" thing and while it was sort of annoying at first, I've had quite a few mums ask if they can pay me to photograph their kids.

I don't really think I'm good enough to consider myself a "photographer" yet, but I'm in a small town a fair hike from the city so figure I might as well start and see how it goes.

I won't bother you with the "how much should I charge" as it's been done to death

However I do have a question regarding the wording of my Model Release. At the beginning at least I'm only trying to cover myself to use images to build a portfolio, so have (hopefully) worded the release to cover that well enough. I'm trying to keep it real simple and cover my bases, what do you think?

I hereby give Free O'Toole, the unrestricted right and permission, without further compensation, to use photographs of me taken during this session to promote Free O'Toole's photographic services. This includes but is not limited to website portfolio, business cards and other business marketing media, but does not include the sale of the images to any third party without written permission of the Model or their guardian

The copyright of all photographs remain under the ownership of Free O'Toole, however Free gives the Model permission to use any photographs taken during this session to be used in anyway except for monetary gain from the sale of that image. Further permissions can be negotiated with Free O'Toole

I'm not qualified to say aye or nay on the model release, but just wanted to say congrats on taking the first step!

Sounds good. At least for a legal adult.

The only thing you need to really change is the "signed" bit at the end. You need to have a place for the minor (their name) and a place for the parent/guardian (name, signature) as well as the date (this usually goes bottom right of the page for me regardless).

Other than that, sounds like an all rights reserved model release that allows the model to use the photos for themselves. Fair's Fair.

If under 18 needs to be signed by parent/guardian

signed..........date...

parent/guardians name and address....................date...

Now I've just got to knock up a pose book/chart and I'm ready to start marketing
