I came across the Getty on Flickr just yesterday and was wondering if anyone has made any money from it and if so (if you don't mind sharing) how much? Or how much one could expect to make from an image? While I agree something is better than nothing, I'm not sure I would want to let some of my images go for close to nothing.

I tried to get in to Shutterstock and Istock for several weeks, and kept getting denied.
And then a marketting company offered me $500 for one of my photos on Flickr, and is now in Camel cigarette ads all over the U.S. This same photo was rejected by both Istock and Shutterstock as "no commercial value". At that point, I had a bad view of stock photography sites, and stopped trying. I recently gave it another shot, and got accepted into Istock (haven't tried shutterstock again). I uploaded 15 photos on Jan 8th, and 7 were rejected for "artifacting". Of those 8, only one has sold, but it has sold 8 times for a total of $10. I got another 10 accepted last week, but none of them have sold. But hey, if I get $10/month for a few months from one photo, I'd be happy. As it was, I wasn't making any money off that photo, and $10 is better than $0. If you want to see what photos I've uploaded, you can find my portfolio on Istock under the username rt80639. |

Thanks for the reply and congrats on the sales. One thing I'm not clear on: once photos are accepted by a stock agency, does they have exclusive rights to sale/distribute or can the photographer submit/sell them elsewhere?

Depends on the agency. For iStock, it's nonexclusive (pretty sure most microstock is), some of the bigger agencies require exclusivity.

Yeah I agree the above poster got ripped off on $500 for that photo, but to be fair a marketer contacted them, not Camel. They had no idea what the photo would be used for and how widely it would be distributed. Live and learn.
I tossed a few photos into the Getty pool on flickr on a whim, I'd like to hear of anyone has any results from this. |

![]() Because the little guys aren't intelligence enough to search google and Getty to find out what the going rates are for these type of ads or for selling pictures as a matter of fact. There's plenty information on the market to find to know what the charge. Check out photoshelter, ASMP, Editorial Photographer's Photo fee calcuator, better yet...call a pro in your area, especially someone from the American Society of Media Photographer Chapter (ASMP) near you. They can provide valuable insight. Hell.........call or email me as I'm a ASMP member and know a ball park figure as to a $$$$$ figure to charge or at least, start from. You folks, just because you have a digital camera and think you shoot good pictures, are killing the market place. I know, I've heard it all before, you gotta start out somewhere, but if you want to make money....good money in this business. EDUCATE YOURSELF! Go read my threads at: Everything you ever wanted to know about photography! On DPS!
