Default Where do I start

Hi I am an amature photographer and still learning as I have a lot to learn but lately my friends have been complimenting me on my photos more and more, I am taking pictures of friends kids and their families but how do I start asking for money from other people instead of just doing it for fun. Like I wont charge my friend but if she refers me to someone then what. If not what would I say I was thinking of an ad or something that said still learning so cheao rates, thanks any help is appreciated.

You have to consider why youre doing it. Is it just for fun? Is it to make a portfolio? Do you want to make a career of it? As silly as it may sound, these are the first steps.

Once youve figured out the goal, then its jsut a case of seeing what you want to get out of it. If it's just for fun, do you want to charge enough to help you fund more equipment? Or make some money on the side? or will it just cover costs?

I agree with OsmosisStudios you ready need to figure out your motivation because this could lead to word of mouth that could create a career and if that is not what you want then you need to know that. I have meet many people who found themselves in a business with no real desire for it and ended up overwhelmed and upset because they felt they could not get out.

If you do want a career start out by charging a low amount (you can always increase your rate) and start building a portfolio.

A little over a year ago I started getting the same thing. Oh, you take good pictures- you should go into business. It didn't matter to me what other people were saying, I knew that I wasn't ready. The skills weren't there yet and I had done zero research into the business aspect of things. Since then there's been a lot of frustration, sweat, and tears and I've grown a lot (still have a ways to go!). Hopefully this March I'll have it together to start up a business for special events and lifestyle portraiture. BUT- I won't touch a wedding. I know my limitations and I'm still not there yet. What can your skills and equipment handle at this point? Do you want to do this as a career? There's nothing wrong with keeping it a hobby and taking gorgeous photos for friends and family if you choose to do so. Good luck!

Default Thank you

Thanks all I do need some new equipment which I hope to get within the next month or so and yes my skills need work and I would not touch a wedding right now either. But taking kids pictures to me is fun and easy and I have a passion and enjoy photography I currently do it now for fun/hobby but want to make a career or atleast a job with a side income out of it.
