No offense, but $75 for 4 hours on Thanksgiving is pretty bad.

First of all, if the shots are good, there is bonus money. (up to $40 more = $10 more/hr)

I thought people would be more interested in getting cash before Christmas. The other option is share of proceeds, but that is paid out about 45 days after the race. Based on my past events, I would expect a "share" would be about $120 (with quality bonus).

You will be done in time to get home for turkey time.

I have done about a half dozen races and have been working to find the right rate of pay. There is no work after the race for you (I have another 20-30 hours of sorting, indexing and then processing all sold images, not to mention dealing with customers).

I am open to and appreciate input and or suggestions.

BTW, Other than being Thanksgiving, what is not optimal about 7-11am? Leaves the rest of the day for anything else you have going on.

Personally, I'm not too worried about doing anything else on any given day (ignoring the Thanksgiving part for a moment). Being ready to shoot at 7 means getting up no later than 5. I don't like 5 a.m., and I'm really not going to want to do anything other than go home and take a nap after that.

Considering the investment in equipment required to shoot what you want, $120 is still low for a 4-hour job.

Default Full filling a niche

While I agree with the compensation being low for pros, it might be just the opportunity for a aspiring photographer out there. Maybe just fun to do too.

I used to train Dive Instructors, that required being at the ocean just before sunrise to get into the water for their night diving training. When we were done, some of us would get our camera systems and photograph the classes that were being done for the open water divers.

A lot of work, but very successful. We just gave them info were they could see their class shots online (in and out of water) and from there they could order or not. Good sales with new divers, excited about doing something most do not.

Good luck

JM

Thanks for you input. I am 100% in agreement that a seasoned pro can make more than $20-30/hr. However, in this economy, some might appreciate the chance to make something in what would otherwise be a non-revenue day. I am also very ok working with non-pro's that are willing to take direction, but I am taking a risk that they will not produce enough saleable images to earn their pay.

Well, I have a couple leads, so hopefully enough pan out that we can make this race a financial success for all photographers involved.
