Default Price list!

I've decided to try and make a part-time living out of photographing children and babies, having had many requests off people. I've come up with a price list and wanted to know what people thought. Too pricey? Too cheap? Any input would be great.
Thanks,
Shaun

It's hard to say what are the printing prices in UK, but converting in AUD and using professional printers for the photos (which i would strongly recommend) you would be looking at a marginal profit. I am not even sure that with those prices you would cover your business expenses (office stuff, phone, petrol)...

But as i said, i am judging by the prices in Australia where i would pay for printing and mounting for package A around 40AUD... That would leave me with about 20 AUD profit, but if i factor in the time i spend doing the photo shot, retouching, time at printers, petrol, phone calls, etc would leave me with no profit at all...

Again, i have no idea about prices in UK so can't really judge.

It looks a bit on the cheap side to me. The other replies are correct in that you're only making a marginal profit.

I know it's tempting to make it cheap to make sales and get a foot hold in the market. I'm sure you have the mind set that I did which is that you already have your equipment, and don't have many overheads, so its just a little extra cash...

..but having said that, while it may seem not a big deal in the beginning when you're still psyched to be getting anything in return for shooting these people, in a little while no matter who they are it starts to feel like work, and that 1 hour of shooting turns into a 30 minute drive there and back, and that hour actually turns into almost two etc etc...

when you offer things that cheaply you may very well end up getting your hand bitten off because your deal is just too good to be true, and all of a sudden youre obligated to cover a dozen jobs in a month with very little to show for it.

Not to say that you have to charge more to keep the demand in check, but if youre working so hard you should at least be getting paid to do it, because the shine will come off of doing it sooner than you think.

Have you checked around for local prices etc?

Thanks for the replies guys. I understand what you're all saying, and wish I could charge more. The problem I have is that the people I am aiming at are used to certain prices, i.e. school photograph packages. Maybe if I say that these prices are just a special offer and then raise them later?

I'll show you what the actual production costs are for each package etc. These prices would be worst case scenario, i.e. sending off for just one print so having to pay delivery for just one print at a time.

Here's how I (and Photo.net) do my price breakdown

(Materials/production cost + time the image took to make x per hour rate) x2*

*This number varies a bit from 2-4, depending on the size of the print, the photo itself, etc.

At the VERY VERY least, take your materials/production x3.

Are you also including the shipping fee - especially for the canvas? My suggestion is to look at what local photographers are doing. But, also know that if you raise your prices you will get more clients. People equate quality with price - even though that is not always the case.

Here in the states we have picture people, walmart, jcpenney and sears. Look at their prices and make sure yours are NOT lower than theirs.

If you are not comfy asking for more than what you have listed, that is fine, just know that as you get more clients under your belt, you WILL raise your prices. And when your prices go up, you will get clients that you do not know and they will find you!

A 1 hr session includes 1 hr of shooting, 30 min of setting up, 30 min to 1 hr of getting there, 1-2 hrs of post (depending on how good you are), 30 min of talking to your client before and after (longer if you show proofs in person), plus time for ordering and mounting frames - let's say, another 30 min if you are fast. 4 hrs minimum, 7 hrs more likely. So you are down to 21 GPB per 4 hrs, or a little over 5 GBP per hour in the best case.

If you have a high volume, like 200 students sitting in the same set up and you spend 5-8 min per pesron shooting and talk only to the school princial, not to each parent - this pricing may be manageable. With individual clients - it's a suicide commercially, but if you are doing it just for fun - not a problem!

Thanks everyone for your comments, really helps. Thanks Rachel for your pricelist. I was hoping to offer to do the photoshoots at the clients homes but have just set up my studio and don't think it would fit in many peoples homes. Think I'm gonna have to do just do a home studio now.
