Next thread that asks for pricing, going to point them towards this and Cost of Business by Jim Bryant. It was a great read.

Yup! I periodically re-read Jim's stuff just to give myself a reality check.

That was an excellent article. I agree with alot of whats been said unfortunately my husband doesn't so now I don't bother discussing pricing with him because WWIII breaks out. He is from the school of thought that when you're starting out you need to price low to get clients through the door. I say NO!! I price what I feel I am worth for my precious time and skill. | don't do crappy Pixie Fotos (walmart equivalent) or Ventue (those crappy white backgrounds that TRY to make it look ARTY ha!). Also, once I am getting regular clients it can be very difficult to raise prices and justify the increase. If you price high on the outset you can run special offers, competitions, discounts etc through the year that would appeal to other clients that perhaps would like the quality of my work but can't quite afford it.

Very good article.

I have a question for everyone, though. I'm still pretty much in the "friends and family" stage. Most of my friends and family would choke if I charged them $1000 for a session. Do you change your rate for "friends and family"?
