Default webiste question

My husband and I are creating a website for me from scratch. The trouble is the software that we are using is saying that it is published on the net but its not being found on any search engine. We don't know why. In some ways its good that it can't be found because the site is still in its infancy but we still don't know why it's not "registering" iykwim.

BTW my website is rachelgingellphotography.co.uk

Does anyone know whats going on?

Thank you! x

I can see the site. I suspect the reason it isn't getting picked up in searches is because all the text is contained in images; there is nothing for the search engines to index.

What is the software you are using and, based on what it is producing, how about using something else?

Search engines learn of new sites in 2 ways.

First you can submit the address of the site directly to the engine, and then engine dispatches a "bot" or "spider" to your site to catalog and add it to its database.

Second, you can post a link to it somewhere that is already frequented by bots and they will follow the link and discover your site all on their own.

They also do it all on their own, through keyword matches.

In your case, Rachel, the problem is that everything on your site is images: there's nothing for Google or any other engine to latch on to. Even the title tag is just "Home". That doesnt help it either. Wulf mentionned this already.

I'd also be curious what software youre using to do this. You'd likely be better off with some basic HTML and CSS scripting first.

I've checked the markup and have to say that whatever software youre using should be shot. It does a terrifying job at creating pages.

Of course, having the site set up the way it is, its also very slow to load, even on a high-speed connection. It's also lacking a bit in the design/functionality side. I'm afraid this may be in large part due to the construction software.

You might want to break up your gallery links to let visitors know what is private versus what is open for viewing. Maybe you could have your client galleries listed under a separate link so casual viewers won't be met with the log in form. It's kind of frustrating to click on something, thinking you get to see some samples of your work, and then be denied because you don't have access.

Google has already found this post! Perhaps if you linked to your site in here it would get picked up

If there are no inbound links at all search engines aren't going to find your site, all it takes is one link on a page that is crawled.

Thanks for the replies. The software we are using is Serif Webplus X 2. Its a pain in the arse. I think we are going to have to start again on in.

I quite like the look of this company: Amazing Internet Services

Its £25 pm or £250 per year + VAT do you think thats reasonable?

I just want the website to look professional.

Thanks for all your advice we have taken them all on board. Hubby LOL's at the "should be shot comment".

That certainly gives better results than Webplus seems to kick out.
