Because there are minors involved and I'm not sure if I would get in trouble. I did not get a model release but they did sign the contract that agrees the photos are my property, yada yada.

Build your release into the contract.

Minors?! What does that have anything to do with it? Were they naked?

LOL! You have no idea the moms I've dealt with. They do NOT want their kids faces to appear online under any circumstances. I just don't want someone to come across their kid's face and then come after me. I agree, I should just incorporate my model release into my contract. That would make the most sense.

Well, as it turns out, the mom hates the pictures. Surprise surprise. She says no one looks good in the portraits. Ugh. None of them had brushed their hair, the kids were jumping out of their seats, dad did nothing but frown...and now she thinks I suck. So now my worst fears are confirmed. I think she is blaming me. I did offer to redo them but I can just tell this is one person who is not easy to please.

Don't redo them for free though. If you really messed up you should. But if you can't get something good because the clients weren't cooperating, that's a whole different story.

I agree, she should pay for another session if needed. If not, then chalk this one up to experience and keep on trucking. You know, along with us and many others, that you're a fantastic photographer.

I must agree, I haven't seen any of your portraits that I have not liked. Rather jealous in fact... I wish I was more of a people person

Bah, it's her damn fault for not getting her kids in line and the photos are a reflection of her crappy parenting. Refer her to a family therapist and then have her call you in 3 months

I agree with the others that you shouldn't redo sessions like this for free.

Someone once told me that If you offer a refund for something that you weren't at fault for, the client will think you were at fault because you gave the refund. I've found that to be true in most cases. (This comes from my experience working for vets, but I would think that it would apply to photography as well).
