Default How to write a bio/resume/artist statement when you have no experience?

I'm supposed to write a bio, resume, and artist's statement for a gallery... but I'm no exactly sure how I'm supposed to do that, since I don't have any experience (my work has never been exhibited anywhere before - but it will be in September!), and I don't do photography full-time... so I have no idea what I'm supposed to say!

we all had to start somewhere.

for the bio, just tell a little about yourself and why you take pictures. what you like to take pictures of. what you like to convey with the pictures.

resume would be a bit tougher. don't look at it like it's a resume you'd use for a regular 9-5 job. have you ever shot for your HS? local clubs you were in, events? this is a tough one since it's been a while since i've looked at my regular resume and can't remember what i put on it hehe. i defer to other more professional photographers with resumes on this one.

my guess for an artist statement would be something about what feelings you like to convey about the pictures you're displaying. kind of like if i were to display 10 pics of fish. for my artist statement i would say something like, "i like fish" and not "the desert sands called to me." i know it's an oversimplification of the statement but you kind of get the gist of it.

but u have some portfolio right? put some work together, make it presentable, brand it... and tell few words how and why u started photography and what it means to you. I think that's gonna be enough.

Old Wolf's advice sounds very good. I took a writing course in college and we talked a lot about writing resumes when you have no experience, but believe me you've got it. Think hard about all the photographic endeavors you've encountered - even just a shoot for family. Also look into photography related experiences you've had or if their is anyway to tie prior work experience that is not necessarily photography related into your work. Say you spent 5 years as a janitor and this taught you to really look for the beauty in anything, or the meaning of hard work, or getting the job done no matter how difficult - play off that and use it to your advantage. I'm sure you'll do fine and good luck with your gallery opportunity!

My word, this is a thread from the dark ages. I wonder what Filemanager ended up writing?

I wrote her a private message and asked her just that. Hopefully she will get it if she's still around.

Hi there!

Maybe you can consider these tips on creating a resume to land on a job despite lack of experience.
  • Focus on Your Positive Achievements
  • Highlight your best points
  • Build up your image
  • Be specific with your job objective
  • Keep it short
  • Use the first page for your Job Objective, Skills and Accomplishments
  • Last but not the least, proofread your resume before submitting it to the company

Be careful with the "build up your image" suggestion. Hyperbole can easily shift into something else. Remember Al Gore and the internet.
